This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neogastroclonium subarticulatum (Turner) L.Le Gall, Dalen & G.W.Saunders.

Type Information
Lectotype locality: Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada; (Silva & al. 1996: 350) Lectotype: Archibald Menzies; 1793; BM; (Hawkes 1986: 331, 332) Notes: Collected by Archibald Menzies in 1787 (E, 7 specimens on the sheet) and 1793 (BM, 3 specimens on the sheet) at Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver I., British Columbia (Hawkes 1986: 331, 332). According to Hawkes, in a note, dated 1 June 1975 and attached to the sheet of Menzies' 1793 material, P.C. Silva comments that the left-hand specimen was the one figured by Turner (1909, Pl. 81, Figs h and i) and that the specimen represents a lectotype rather than a holotype. This specimen is designated lectotype by Hawkes (1986).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), oval, elliptical, i.e., broadest at the middle, the sides curved and length:breadth generally 2:1 (Stearn 1973).
