The type species (holotype) of the genus Placophora is Placophora binderi (J.Agardh) J.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hypoglossum revolutum (Harvey) J.Agardh.
Type Information
Type locality: "ad littus austro-occidentale Novae Hollandiae"; (Silva & al. 1996: 502) Holotype: Herb. Agardh, LD; 42935 (Womersley 2003: 45) Notes: According to Womersley (2003: 45), Placophora cucullata, from Fremantle, Western Australia, holotype in Herb. Agardh, LD, 42935, is a fragment 5-6 mm high of a Hypoglossum, possibly H. revolutum.

Adjective A (Latin), hooded (Stearn 1983).
