The type species (lectotype) of the genus Treptacantha is Treptacantha abies-marina (S.G.Gmelin) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gongolaria barbata (Stackhouse) Kuntze.

Type locality: [No type locality specified]; (Stackhouse 1809: 81) Notes: While no type locality is driectly specified, Stackhouse refers to his Ner. Brit. t. 14, Fucus barbatus "Hab. Devonshire: and S. W . Coast" which could be selected as lectotype. Fucus barbatus Stackhouse is left centre with a portion of a fertile branch.
