Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptophytum foecundum (Kjellman) W.H.Adey.

Source of Synonymy
Adey, W.H. (1966). The genera Lithothamnium, Leptophytum (nov. gen.) and Phymatolithon in the Gulf of Maine. Hydrobiologia 28: 321-370, 112 figs, tables I-VI.

Syntype localities: Kara Sea: Actinia Bay at 76º8' N 90º25'E and Uddebay (east coast of Novaja Zemlya) at 74.5ºN; (Athanasiadis & Adey 2006: 90) Holotype: F.R. Kjellman; On pebbles and stones; UPS; unnumbered (Athanasiadis & Adey 2006: 90) Notes: Holotype labeled 'Lithothamnion foecundum orig. ex.' and including five slides B3: 96-B3100 labeled 'Lithothamnion foecundum Kariska havet...'.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fruitful, fertile (Stearn 1983).
