Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion glaciale (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Type locality: Ellesmerelands søndre kyst [= the southern coast of Ellesmereland], ved skjærene udenfor [= at the skerries outside] Havnefjorden, [Northwest Territories], Canada; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 300) Neotype: Bay [?]; 22.vi.1900; ca 15 metres; TRH; B9-2255 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 300) Notes: Peña et al., 2021: 10 note that Woelkerling (1993: 215) designated as neotype the specimen illustrated by Printz (1929: pl. 23, fig.5). Collector: E. Bay (Gabrielson et al., 2023).
