Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota fasciola var. repens (J.Agardh) Ardissone.

Adjective (Latin), creeping, prostrate and rooting (Stearn 1983).
