Type locality: "Habitat in saxis et rupibus submarinis in comitatibus Hantoniensi et Dorsetsoemsi" [It inhabits rocks and submarine rocks in the counties of Hampshire and Dorset: south coast of England]; (Gordon 1972) Neotype (Torquay, Devon, England; designated by Gordon 1972: 48): E.A.L. Batters; August 1902; BM; (Gordon 1972: 48) Notes: Hudson's herbarium was mostly lost in a fire (Dixon 1963: 256).

Adjective (Latin), cleft into many parts (Stearn 1983).
