The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Protoperidinium fusiforme (Abé) Kawami & Matsuoka.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), fusiform; swollen at the middle and tapering to each end like a spindle; narrowly ellipsoid (Stearn 1973).
