The type species (holotype) of the genus Chlorochytrium is Chlorochytrium lemnae Cohn.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chlorocystis cohnii (E.P.Wright) L.Reinhard.

Named for Ferdinand Cohn, German phycologist.
