Nomenclatural note
Treated as a new name in INA. "Orthography of specific epithet then (Areschoug 1852: 509) mistakenly altered to roseum but species retained in Hapalidium with a reference to Kützing 1843, also with the altered spelling 'roseum'. Rosanoff (1866: 77) then published the name Melobesia rosea, using Areschoug's orthography and citing 'Hapalidium roseum Kützing' as the basionym. (Chamberlain 1983: 306-308 provided further information on these names and concluded that Rosanoff's specimens were not conspecific with the original specimens of Kützing.) Foslie (1898b: 11), citing Kützing as the authority, first recognized Melobesia rosea as a distinct species, then (Foslie 1900b: 16, 1900i: 15) treated 'Hapalidium roseum Kützing' (listed as 'Melobesia rosea (Kützing) Rosanoff' in Foslie 1900i) as a heterotypic synonym of Lithothamnion corticiforme (Kützing) Foslie, and finally (Foslie 1905c: 72) listed Hapalidium roseolum (using Kützing's original orthography) as a heterotypic synonym of Lithothamnion membranaceum (Esper) Foslie]."
