Nomenclatural note
Roberts (1968: 257-258) gave reasons for considering Fucus barbatus Goodenough & Woodward a new species rather than a redescription of F. barbatus Linnaeus (1753: 1161; type locality: 'Oceano'), even though she thought that the two names apply to the same species. When F. barbatus Goodenough & Woodward is interpreted as a later homonym, it is not priorable, and Abrotanifolia barbata Stackhouse, intended to be a new combination, is treated as a new name in accordance with Art. 58.3 (Silva, Basson & Moe 1966). - (26 July 2006) - G.M.
