Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota friabilis Setchell.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), Of (from) Ceylon, an island in the Indian Ocean off southern India (cf. ceylonensis & ceylonicus).

Taxonomic note
According to Silva et al. (1996) this species is a possible taxonomic synonym of Dictyota adnata Zanardini.
Also according to Silva et al. (1996) this species is a possible taxonomic synonym of Dictyota humifusa Hörnig, Schnetter & Coppejans. De Clerck (2003) notes that this was considered as a synonym of D. adnata by Weber-van Bosse (1925: 209-210)and that Hörnig et al. (1992a: 57) considered it conspecific with D. humifusa. De Clerck & Coppejans (1997b: 417) placed D. ceylanica var. rotundata in synonymy with D. friabilis Setchell. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
