The type species (holotype) of the genus Turbinaria is Turbinaria turbinata (Linnaeus) Kuntze.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Turbinaria condensata Sonder.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), toothed, usually with sharp teeth pointing outwards (Stearn 1983).
