Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithon lenormandii (Areschoug) W.H.Adey.

Type Information
Type locality: Eyrarbakki, Iceland ; (Düwel & Wegeberg 1996: 473) Holotype : Epitype (C): figs 5-21 (slides of material collected by Dowel and Wegeberg at Eyrarbakki, 4 June 1992); table 2 (epitype) S; (Düwel & Wegeberg 1996: 473, 474, fig. 1) Notes: According to Düwel and Wegeberg (1996: 473), the holotype material is a slide. They note that because this slide does not show any taxonomic characteristics except sporangia size, it is possible to select an epitype according to Art. 9.7. in the ICBN (Greuter 1994). According to Athanasiadis and Adey (2003), the [above] epitypification has resulted in the name Lithophyllum laeve Strömfelt being typified by two heterogeneous elements, i.e., the holotype and the epitype [Phymatolithon lenormandii (Areschoug) Adey]. Specimen proposed as conserved type (Athanasisdis & Adey, 2003): Reydarfjordur, East Iceland, collected by Adey, 29 July 1966; type: WHA-66-24-J2-070-090 in US.
