The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Roseolithon indicum (Foslie) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

This is a marine species.
Habitat
Found at depths of 5-20 m as unattached and completely free-living rhodoliths (Womersley, 1996: 181).
