Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion glaciale (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Type locality: Rottingsund, Frøyen, Trondheimsfjord, Norway; (Woelkerling 1998: 341) Lectotype: Foslie; 10.vii.1894; TRH; B25-2773, includes slides 154, 157 and five unnumbered slides; designated by Woelkerling, 1993: 74 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 376) Notes: Isolectotype: PC, Foslie, no. 4, Thuret-Bornet herbarium (box collection, filed under Lithothamnion dimorphum). Habitat: 0-55 m depth on sandy and stony bottom; lectotype is narrowed to the Foslie 1895: pl. 10, fig. 3 specimen which has been sequenced (Peña et al., 2021: 8). Frøjen (now Frøya), Rottingsundet, Trondeland, Norway (Gabrielsen & al., 2023).
