Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion tophiforme (Esper) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Type locality: Norwegian Sea, Tromsö ; (INA 1996) Lectotype (designated by Peña et al., 2021: 13; illustrated by Printz, 1920; pl. 19, fig. 11): M.H. Foslie; 5.viii.1882; TRH; C13-3203 (Peña & al. 2021: 13) Notes: "Type: apparently not designated (Athanasiadis 1996: 44, who suggests with a question mark that type material is in UPS and lists the taxon in the synonomy of Lithothamnion tophiforme). TRH has one syntype (C13-3203)." (Woelkering et al. 2005: 443).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), sorus-bearing (Stearn 1983).
