Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion glaciale (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Foslie; 8.ix.1890; TRH; unnumbered, includes slides 92 and 93 and one unnumbered slide (Woelkerling 1998: 342) Notes: Isotypes: PC, Foslie, no. 14, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (box collection, filed under Lithothamnion divergens); BM, algal box collection 419. Holotype: C11-3167 (Foslie, 1895: pl. 16, fig. 48); DNA sequence data confirm the placement of the species in L. glaciale (Peña et al., 2021: 9). Kvaenangen, Skørpen (now Skorpa), collected by M. Foslie, 8.ix.1890 (Gabrielsen et al., 2023)
