Nomenclatural note
The name Lithothamnion stroemfeltii f. tenuissimum first appeared in the independently paginated offprint (5 December 1895) and subsequently (30 December 1895) on p. 173 of the journal version of Foslie (1895) (see Woelkerling 1993: 277 for details).
As noted by Düwel & Wegeberg (1966: 472-473), it is a superfluous and thus illegitimate name for Lithophylum lenormandii f. laeve Foslie. The latter name is typified by the type of Lithophyllum laeve Strömfelt (Adey et al. 2001: 192). The holotype of L. laeve was considered by Düwel & Wegeberg (1996) to be demonstrably ambiguous and not critically identifiable for purposes of the precise application of a name to a taxon, necessitating designation of an epitype. Based on the study of relevant types and other specimens, Düwel & Wegeberg (1996) concluded that the designated epitype of Leptophytum laeve Adey (1966) was conspecific with the type of Phymatolithon lenormandii.
