The type species (holotype) of the genus Furcellaria is Furcellaria lumbricalis (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polyides rotunda (Hudson) Gaillon.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), almost circular, with length breadth ratio of about 6 to 5 (Stearn 1983).
