The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gastridium is Gastridium kaliforme (Goodenough & Woodward) Lyngbye.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lomentaria clavellosa (Lightfoot ex Turner) Gaillon.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), purplish, becoming purple (Stearn 1983).
