Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Spongites is Spongites fruticulosus Kützing.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chamberlainium impar (Foslie) Puckree-Padua, P.W.Gabrielson & Maneveldt.

Type Information
Holotype locality: Natal or between Natal and the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa; (Chamberlain 1994: 153) Holotype: A. Weber-van Bosse; 1893; TRH; A3-146 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 40) Notes: Chamberlain (1994: 153) notes that as indicated on the specimens, there is some doubt as to whether Mme Weber van Bosse collected this material in Natal or Cape Province; the species has never subsequently been observed in Natal, and it is more likely to have been the latter. Holotype sequenced: GenBank Accession MN882574.
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Habitat
Occurring on intertidal rocks on shores exposed to strong wave action, forming a distinct, yellowish band immediately above the Patella cochlear Born/Spongites yendoi band (Chamberlain 1994: 153).
