The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

Type Information
Type locality: "Hab. in mari Bahusiae" [Bohuslän, Sweden]; (Agardh 1841: 44) Lectotype: LD; herb. alg. Agardh 18737 (Athanasiadis 1986: fig. 6) Notes: Athanasiadis (1996: 168) gave as type locality the Koster Islands.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), cross-shaped (Stearn 1983).
