Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ptilota serrata Kützing.
Type Information
Type locality: Norway; (Gunnerus 1776: 122) Notes: "Lectotype (designated here): [icon in] Gunnerus, Fl. Norveg. 2: t. 2, f. 8. 1776. Again Gunnerus was unspecific as to localities and collections, but referred to his own tab. II fig. 8 which accordingly is an obligate lectotype. Likewise I designate the best specimen, 972.2 (without any data), in his herbarium as epitype. This is the same specimen that was annotated to be type material by Taylor in 1961." (Jørgensen 2012: 1091).

Adjective (Latin), pectinate, with narrow close-set divisions like a comb (Stearn 1983).
