This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondrus crispus Stackhouse.

Syntype localities: Marazion in littore Cornubiensi et apud Ilfracombe in com. Devon. frequens [Marazion, Cornwall and Ilfracombe, South Devon, England]; (Goodenough & Woodward 1797: 173)
Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), spreading, outspread, diverging from the axis at almost 90 degrees (Stearn 1983).

Taxonomic note
The original material from Cornwall and Devon in England is representative of the highly polymorphic species Chondrus crispus. Later authors have used the name to apply to an unrelated species of Gymnogongrus. - (14 June 2008) - G.M. Guiry
