The type species (holotype) of the genus Lophosiphonia is Lophosiphonia obscura (C.Agardh) Falkenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia saccorhiza (Collins & Hervey) Hollenberg.

Type locality: Bermuda; (INA 1996) Notes: Isotypes: NY, Collins Herbarium; Gibbet Island, Bermuda (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017).
