The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria cirrosa (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Stypocaulon scoparium (Linnaeus) Kützing.

Adjective (Latin), spinulose (Stearn 1983).
