Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Heterosiphonia plumosa (J.Ellis) Batters.

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), spreading, outspread, diverging from the axis at almost 90 degrees (Stearn 1983).
