The type species (lectotype) of the genus Calothrix is Calothrix confervicola C.Agardh ex Bornet & Flahault.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Scytonematopsis crustacea (Thuret ex Bornet & Flahault) Kováčik & Komárek.

Lectotype locality: Tangier, Morocco; (Silva & al. 1996: 72) Notes: Syntype localities: Cherbourg and Tanger (Thuret in Bornet & Thuret, 1876). The lectotype locality was first chosen by Drouet (1973: 175, 176) (Silva et al., 1996)
