Nomenclatural note
Hypnea rissoana was superfluous when published and hence illegitimate, because its protologue (J. Agardh, 1842: 150) included Sphaerococcus divaricatus C. Agardh (1827: 645) (=Hypnea musciformis) (Furnari et al., 1999). "Differently from Furnari et al.%u2019s (1999: 42) interpretation], J. Agardh's H. rissoana should be considered as a legitimate new name and not as an illegitimate new species. In fact, as clearly said at the end of the treatment of H. rissoana, J. Agardh (1852: 150) realized he could not use the binomial H. divaricata for his intended "new combination" based on Sphaerococcus divaricatus C. Agardh 1827 nom. illeg. (being a later homonym of S. divaricatus C. Agardh 1817) due to the existence of Hypnea divaricata (C. Agardh) Greville, based on S. divaricatus C. Agardh 1817. Therefore, H. rissoana is treated as a nomen novum, having S. divaricatus C. Agardh 1827 nom. illeg. as replaced synonym." (Furnari, pers. comm. 9 March 2020). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
