The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia sertularioides (Grateloup) J.Agardh.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), dressed in purple, empurpled (Stearn 1983).
