The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cladophora coelothrix Kützing.

Lectotype locality: Marseille, France; (Hoek 1963: 41) Lectotype: Agardh (LD); 8538 (Hoek 1963: 41) Notes: van den Hoek (1963: 41) selected Marseille as the lectotype locality of this species. J. Agardh (1842: 13) lists a number of syntype localities in the Mediterranean (Nice, Marseille and Pozzuoli).

Adjective (Latin), creeping, prostrate and rooting (Stearn 1983).
