The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Compsothamnion decompositum (J.Agardh) Maggs & L'Hardy-Halos.

Type locality: "in oceano atlantico ad orcas Galliae"; (Dixon & Price 1981: 132) Holotype: LD, Herb. Alg. Agardh; 18964 (Dixon & Price 1981: 132) Notes: Comments: This entity is often attributed, partly or completely to Grateloup, due to a misinterpretation of the comment by J. G. Agardh that Grateloup had given the manuscript name Mertensia decomposita to the specimen used as the basis for the original treatment.

Distributional note
Nielsen & Gunnarsson (2001: 92) record this species as being an excluded species for the Faroe Islands. "Finally, agreeing with Gómez Garreta et al. (2001: 446), we think that Mediterranean records of Callithamnion decompositum J. Agardh [= Compsothamnion decompositum (J. Agardh) Maggs et L%u2019Hardy-Halos, taxon excludendum], are misidentifications with A. tripinnatum. Consequently, we consider Compsothamnion decompositum as a taxon excludendum."
