Description
Plants pinkish- to rosy-red, to 42 mm tall, attached by small discoid holdfasts, giving rise to short simple or branched stalks bearing 1-4 vesicles; vesicles obovoid and becoming greatly elongated at maturity, to 8 mm diam. and 36 mm long; stalks short, terete, to 0.5 mm diam., solid, and irregularly branched; vesicle walls consisting of 2(-3) layers, the innermost cells (medulla) lightly pigmented with branched linear plastids, subglobose to ellipsoidal, 30-120 µm diam., 40-120 µm long, with unmodified cells producing 1-17 often peripheral, but some central, pyriform to obovoid secretory cells projecting into the inner vesicle cavity, 10-45 µm diam., 15-35 µm long; outer cortex of mostly a single layer of varying sized, mostly elongate, rectangular to polygonal highly pigmented cells, forming an incomplete layer over adjacent walls of medullary cells, with the larger cells flanked by smaller cortical cells, 2-12 µm diam. and 5-15 µm long, these only occasionally overlapping the larger cortical cells, 12-28 µm diam. and 15-30(-43) µm long, thus forming two outer cortical layers; tetrasporangia unknown; dioecious, spermatangia clustered on outer cortical cells, 1-2 µm diam.; cystocarps numerous and scattered over female vesicles, prominently protruding to the exterior of the vesicle, 400-700 µm diam., ostioles lacking; carposporangia obovoid to irregularly angular, 7-15 µm diam. and 15-30 µm long.
