The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidiella acerosa (Forsskål) Feldmann & Hamel.

Adjective (Latin), horny, hard and close-textured but not brittle (Stearn 1983).
