The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Huismaniella ramellosa (Kützing) G.H.Boo & S.M.Boo.

Type locality: "An Muschelschalen der Küste von Neuholland: Preiss!" [on mussel shells on the coast of New Holland = Western Australia]; (Kützing 1843: 405) Holotype: J.A.L.Preiss; L; 941, 11...11 [barcode 0055890] (Boo & al. 2016: 975) Notes: Santelices (2007: 295) notes that he has examined a fragment of type (UC No. 93568). Holotype in Leiden is ullustrated by Boo et al. (2016: fig. 2 A).

Adjective (Latin), horny, hard and close-textured but not brittle (Stearn 1983).
