Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Mesophyllum is Mesophyllum lichenoides (J.Ellis) Me.Lemoine.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Magnephycus engelhartii (Foslie) Athanasiadis & D.L.Ballantine.

Type locality: "Grahamstown" [probably near Port Alfred, Cape Province], South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 256) Holotype: Becker; v.1899; no habitat data on type; TRH; B17-2591 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 348) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Foslie (1929: 46).

Adjective (Latin), showy, splendid (Stearn 1983).
