The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitophyllum punctatum (Stackhouse) Greville.

Syntype localities: "Elle se trouve dans la Méditerranée, près de Barcelone [Barcelona, Catalonia, Mediterranean Spain]; dans l'Océan, à la Corogne [La Coroña, Atlantic Spain]"; (De Candolle 1802: 131)
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), marked with two-coloured spots, having the centre of one colour surrounded by a broad ring of another (Stearn 1983).
