The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Canistrocarpus magneanus (De Clerck & Coppejans) De Paula & De Clerck.

Eponomy
Named for Francis Magne, french phycologist.
