Taxonomic note
Loiseaux (1967) recognised this entity as a species distinct from Myrionema orbiculare. Parke & Dixon (1968) treated the two as one species, but Fletcher (1987:109-111) accepted Loiseaux's interpretation as did Price et al. (1978) and Schneider & Searles (1991: 133). Parke (1933) syggested that this entity might play a part in the life history of Cladosiphon contortus. (M.D. Guiry, 5 July 2002). John et al. (2004) cite Ascocyclus orbicularis (J. Agardh) Magn. and Myrionema orbiculare (J. Agardh) Loiseaux as synonyms of this species. However, Cormaci et al. (2012: 198-199), write "...on the basis of literature data (Hamel, 1935; Loiseaux, 1967b; Fletcher, 1987) the following characters of M. orbiculare, in our opinion, seem to be sufficient to distinguish it from M. magnusii...". - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
