The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Homoeocladia distans (W.Gregory) Kuntze.

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), distant (Stearn 1973).
