Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chamaepinnularia krookii (Grunow) Lange-Bertalot & Krammer.

Type locality: Sweden: Westerbotten(leg. Krook ["Krock"]; Czech Republic: sedimentary layers at Soos near Franzenbad (salt water); (Grunow 1882: 155) Notes: Soos National Reserve (Czech Republic) (Wetzel et al. 2013: 152).

Eponomy
Apparently amed for a Swedish (male?) botanist called "Krook" (Krammer 1992: 78).
