The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphora is Amphora ovalis (Kützing) Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphora gigantea var. fusca (A.W.F.Schmidt) Cleve.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1983).
