The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa chemnitzia (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: "ad oras calidiores atlanticas Americae a sinu superiore Mexicano saltem ad Pernambucco usque descendens"; (Agardh 1873: 37) Notes: "Lectotype Locality: Vera Cruz, Mexico, Gulf of Mexico (Belton et al. 2014). Specimen LD-16789, cited by Belton et al. (2014), could be a possible lectotype (see Habitat and Comments section below)." (Ballantine & al. 2023: 15).

Adjective (Latin), with flowers borne in racemes.
