The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Staurosirella harrisonii (W.Smith) E.Morales & C.E.Wetzel.
