The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hydrolithon is Hydrolithon reinboldii (Weber Bosse & Foslie) Foslie.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Harveylithon samoënse (Foslie) A.Rösler, Perfectti, V.Peña & J.C.Braga.
