The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gyrosigma balticum (Ehrenberg) Rabenhorst.

Type locality: Germany: Baltic Sea [Kiel]; (Index Nominum Algarum) Type: Ehrenberg; 23.x.1832; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Designated neotypes: Texel, Schorren Nature Reserve, 21-IX-1989 (Sterrenburg no. 280). Neotype BM 81615, isoneotypes deposited in ANSP, BRM (Sterrenburg, 1995: 402).
