Type Information
Type locality: Ad insulam nomine Tjorn in mari boreali [Tjörn I., Bohuslän, Sweden]; (INA 1996: 214) Notes: Watanabe (2012: 1266) could not find any Surirella species on the Tjorn disks in the Ehrenberg collection, Berlin. The original material from which the disks were made was collected by Mr. Eckstrom of Gothenburg, sent to Berlin via Mr. Berzelius (Ehrenberg 1841), and recorded in "Clara's index (Lazarus and Jahn 1998) with index no. 2318. However, the material is not present today. Ehrenberg made several drawings under the name of Navicula (Surirella) fastuosa, but the specimens illustrated were not from Tjorn. A neotype will be necessary for this species and a formal taxonomic proposal will be made in a subsequent paper (in preparation) (Watanabe et al., 2012: 1266).
