The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aglaothamnion uruguayense (W.R.Taylor) N.E.Aponte, D.L.Ballantine & J.N.Norris.
