The type species (lectotype) of the genus Coscinodiscus is Coscinodiscus argus Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Thalassiosira praeyabei (Simonsen) F.Akiba & Y.Yanagisawa.

Lower continental margin, 50 mi. W of Cape Mendocino, California, USA (39 57.71N, 125W. (DSDP sample 173-29-1, 55-56 cm). Cenozoic.;
